Leaders of community organizations in Miami, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Osaka will discuss their efforts to fight homelessness throughout the ongoing syndemic—the interaction of the Covid-19 pandemic and systemic inequality. Speakers will discuss how their organizations have worked to protect vulnerable persons as well as expand equitable access to housing, health care, and other community resources. Special attention will be paid to the role of service hubs, which are central urban neighborhoods where subsidized housing, supportive social services, and social movements addressing homelessness cluster. We will discuss how these places can serve as “refuge neighborhoods” promoting survival and liberation.
